This is what the mountain will be when the stature is finished. When that is no one knows. This started with the first blast in 1948. One man, KORCZAK ZIOLKOWSKI started this after he was ask 2 years prior to undertake this project. Korczak was a well know sculptor out of Boston. THe Plaque reads 'Crazy Horse Memorial is to be carved not so much as a lineal likeness, but more as a memoril to the spirit of Crazy Horse-to his people With his left hand thrown out pointing in answer to the derisive question asked by s white man. 'Where are yours lands now?' he re4plied.' My lands are where my dead lie buried,\." signed by Korczak
I am 3/4 mile from the sculptor. Korczack started this carving in 1948, by himself. About two years later a girl my the name of Ruth, came to the site and help him build a ladder that would reach to the top of the mountain. Later they married, produced 10 children, 5 girls and 5 boys. With the death of Korczak, Ruth took over with the help of their children. Now, they have 3rd generation working on the project. Also, they now have a school on the grounds, which teach, the stone carving and they help with the project They would not take any funding from the federal or State government. It was thought that if they took money from the government it could change the vision they had for the surrounding land, being a university and hospital for the native American Indians. They have kept the project going by creating businesses to fund the project, a dairy, lumber yard, now the gift shop and donation. It is a good story. You should google Crazy Horse and every in South Dakota, it is a must visit. You will learn all things about the native American Indiana
Then, I did go to to Mount Rushmore. Here is a photo. When, I compare the two, I am not that impressed with Mount Rushmore.
